Garland Unveils ‘Art at Every Turn’ Program to Transform Traffic Signal Boxes Into Public Art Canvases

The City of Garland is rolling out a new way to jazz up those bland traffic signal boxes – with art. The ‘Art at Every Turn’ Traffic Box Art Wrap Program is an initiative to bring public art directly to the community by converting functional infrastructure into creative canvases. In its first phase, approximately 25-30 traffic signal boxes will get a visual overhaul courtesy of local artists, according to the

Selected based on a combination of experience, skill, and a knack for community engagement, artists within a 60-mile radius of Garland are invited to submit designs that reflect the area’s culture and spirit. It’s not just about eye candy, though. The program aims to combat vandalism and tagging, adding a practical edge to the beautification efforts. The gig pays $1,500 for three designs, and artists better be ready to deliver crisp, high-resolution work suitable for vinyl reproduction.

Artists hoping to wrap Garland’s streets in their vision have until November 30 to apply. An Artist Selection Panel, combining art professionals and community members, will pick 7-10 finalists who demonstrate not only exceptional artistry but also a strong connection to Garland’s community vibe. The designs are expected by February 28, 2025, with installations slated to start the following March. Interested artists, start your engines and let creativity flow on Garland’s streets.

Intrigued creators can sign up as individuals or teams but must be older than 18 to partake. According to the official call, a broad range of artistic styles are welcome, whether it’s Abstract, Impressionism, Digital, or anything in between, ensuring a diverse display of talent on Garland’s roadsides. As expressed in the announcement, the hope is to feature “creativity, and uniqueness,” giving locals something more inspiring to look at than grey metal boxes.
