Georgetown Middle Schooler Miraculously Survives 45 Minutes Without Heartbeat, Spurs CPR Training Initiative

The Georgetown ISD community is still grappling with the harrowing event from last school year when Forbes Middle School student Isaac Flores collapsed on the football field and was without a heartbeat for nearly 45 minutes. Thanks to the life-saving actions of coaches and first responders, the 12-year-old is now being hailed as a “living miracle.” According to aFOX 7 Austin report, it was a routine day in March that took a dramatic turn when Flores suddenly went down during football practice, with no immediate explanation for the catastrophic event.

Witnesses described the scene as something out of a nightmare, with Forbes athletic coordinator Paul Gammage and coach Liz Boyd immediately stepping in to literally try to save a life. Gammage recalled that he “tapped him a couple of times, was trying to get some sort of reaction out of it,” before realizing the severity of the situation, as he toldYahoo News. Without haste, Boyd began administering CPR, marking the first time she had to execute the emergency procedure in her two-decade career.

Paramedics arrived on the scene to find Boyd performing compression after compression. Georgetown Fire paramedic Jenna Whiteside was quotedsaying, “I don’t think Isaac would be here if it wasn t for those coaches who had started it before we even got there.” The quick and trained response from those first on the scene proved critical, underscoring the importance of CPR knowledge and accessibility of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs).

Remarkably, Isaac has since made a full recovery, with his motherRebekah Hignojos stating, “Blows my mind every single day. He wakes up, and there s nothing wrong with him.” Her gratitude was palpable as she struggled to find the words to adequately thank those who saved her son. The medical team still has not determined why Isaac’s heart stopped, but it’s clear that the immediate action taken was pivotal. Jenna Whiteside emphasized, “This just proves how learning and knowing when to do it and if you work somewhere like a school or office building, knowing where your AEDs are,” according to a statement she gave toFOX 7 Austin.

The Georgetown Fire Department is reinforcing this message by offering CPR and AED training to the public, hoping to equip others with the skills that could one day make a life-and-death difference. Isaac’s story is not just a heartwarming tale of survival but a call to action for widespread emergency preparedness. Soon, Isaac will attend the Ascension Seton Williamson Foundation Gala, as reported byFOX 7 Austin, an event not only set to recognize his incredible journey but also to raise funds for families facing similar medical crises.
