Georgia Man Charged with Assaulting Officers During January 6 Capitol Breach

In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia accused a man from Georgia with assaulting law enforcement and other felonies during the January 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. In what is considered to be a terrible day in American history, 31-year-old Leander Antwione Williams allegedly interrupted a joint session of Congress that was entrusted with confirming the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Williams faces felony charges for assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder, in addition to multiple misdemeanor offenses, according to the criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia. These charges raise concerns regarding Williams’ motivation for the Capitol breach. Williams was arrested yesterday in Savannah. His case highlights the far-reaching consequences of the Capitol breach, as more than 1,561 people have been prosecuted since the event, including more than 590 for assaulting or obstructing law enforcement.

Williams was allegedly a member of the first group to confront and subdue Capitol Police officers near the Peace Monument, according to the complaint. Williams allegedly played a major part in the violence as he moved towards the West Plaza and resisted police attempts to keep him under control. Williams persisted in his involvement, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, hiding behind other rioters and allegedly trying to use both hands to seize a bike rack barricade in order to pull it away from the police line.

Williams allegedly persisted in challenging police lines and joining chants of ‘U.S.A.’ while raising his fists, even after being repelled and eventually charged with entering and remaining in a restricted facility or grounds. He lingered outside the terrace entrance, a scene of bloody altercations, until he finally left the Capitol grounds in the twilight. After conducting an investigation, the FBI’s Atlanta and Washington Field Offices designated Williams as AFO (Assault on Federal Officer) #419.

Williams’ arrest was made possible by the assistance of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia, underscoring the continued efforts of law enforcement to hold those responsible for the events of January 6 accountable. The investigation is ongoing as Williams makes his first appearance, and the FBI is still looking for the public’s assistance. The case adds to the larger investigation into the mayhem of that day in addition to concentrating on the accusations made against Williams. Williams continues to be presumed innocent unless proven guilty, which is a cornerstone of the legal system.
