DDN – A man died and another was injured after a chase with the Wilkinson County Sheriff’s Office, according to a Georgia State Patrol announcement.
According to Wilkinson County Sheriff Richard Chatman, at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, a Wilkinson County deputy attempted to stop Daniel Dean, who was wanted on a felony child molestation warrant and three additional crimes. He was also joined in the car by his 40-year-old brother Steven Dean.
According to Chatman, Daniel Dean refused to stop when officers attempted to pull him over and drove at high speeds past many intersections and a roundabout, ignoring traffic warnings. The hunt continued so long that it eventually reached Twiggs County.
According to the GSP announcement, a deputy used the Precision Immobilization Technique to flip Dean’s pickup vehicle 180 degrees and bring it to a stop. Chatman stated that they did so because Dean’s irresponsible driving posed a hazard to other cars on the road.
Dean’s vehicle crashed as a result of the PIT maneuver, ejecting his brother from the truck. Twiggs County Coroner Harold Reese pronounced Steven Dean deceased at the crash site.
According to Chatman, Daniel Dean was undergoing surgery, and his present health is unknown. In addition to his felony child molestation accusation, he was wanted for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, sexual battery, and a probation violation.
The Georgia State Patrol is still investigating the crash.
