Germantown Unveils New Landmark Water Tower, Earns Public Utility Project Award

Standing over 500,000 gallons strong, the new Germantown Water Tower off Forest Hill Irene Road is now a key feature of the local landscape. This landmark is the result of a monumental effort spanning over five decades, with Public Works Director Bo Mills at the helm. Capping off years of planning and setbacks, the tower was inaugurated earlier this month, symbolizing a victory for community infrastructure and resiliency.

While the Germantown Water Tower serves as a new beacon for progress, it’s not without its merit among professionals. The Tennessee Chapter of the American Public Works Association (TCAPWA) took notice, bestowing upon the tower its first TCAPWA Bob Freudenthal Public Utility Project of the Year Award. According to

Germantown’s official website

, the award pays homage to public projects that are critical in scope and demonstrate innovation in utility services. “This project exemplifies the persistence required by public works professionals to meet a community’s infrastructure needs,” said Mills.

The inception of the tower can be traced back to 1970, outlined in the City’s master plan to bolster the eastern Germantown’s water system. Hurdles appeared early on with local opposition stalling the initial push in the late ’70s. It wasn’t until a crucial land swap in 2020 that the project found its footing. Mills, alongside his team, was crucial in reviving the much-delayed infrastructure project, eventually gaining full support from both the community and City officials.

At the project’s ribbon-cutting last Monday, Mayor Mike Palazzolo not only marked the completion of this persistence-laden journey but also the ushering in of a new chapter for the city’s infrastructure. The tower’s presence is a culmination of careful planning, community engagement, and a commitment to resilience, addressing both growth-related and fire safety needs in the area.
