GM adds 132,000+ pickup trucks to recall for tailgates that can open unexpectedly

More than 132,000 heavy-duty pickups in the United States are being added to a prior recall by General Motors due to tailgate release switches that have the potential to short circuit and open the gates while the trucks are in park.

The recall expands a February recall of 323,000 heavy-duty vehicles to include specific 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks. The only trucks impacted are those with a manual gate and power lock and release.

According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday, the company claims that water can enter electronic gate release switches and cause the gates to unlatch. Cargo may tumble onto the road and prove dangerous if that occurs.

The company discovered 237 field reports of tailgates opening suddenly, which led to the addition of the trucks in the latest recall. GM advises owners to make sure the gate is closed and locked before driving until repairs are completed.

Dealers will install new, water-resistant touch pad switch assemblies in place of the outside ones.

Beginning on January 13, owners will receive notification via letter.
