Good Jobs Challenge Hits Milestone with Over 12,000 American Workers Placed in Jobs, Says U.S. Department of Commerce

The U.S. Department of Commerce has announced a significant milestone through its Good Jobs Challenge, successfully placing over 12,000 American workers in jobs. The initiative, funded by the American Rescue Plan and launched by the Biden-Harris Administration, allocated $500 million to various workforce training programs across the nation. These programs are focused on, but not limited to, critical sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, and information technology, according to a press release by the

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated, “President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda is rooted in empowering Americans with the opportunities they need to secure family-sustaining jobs in the communities that raised them. The Good Jobs Challenge embodies that mission, and by hitting this milestone, we’re showing American families what these policies look like in action.” The program, now in its second year, aims to bolster workforce systems and foster industry-led partnerships, crafting a path for workers to develop skills in high-demand, ensuring the U.S.’s competitive edge globally, as per the

Targeting communities historically left on the periphery, the Good Jobs Challenge has nearly doubled the annual earnings for workers who previously worked in low-paying jobs. The workforce diversity is well represented, with people of color making up half the participants. According to the press release, there is a noteworthy representation of Black workers at almost twice their national average, and Native American or indigenous workers at more than five times their national average in the workforce.

In July of this year, a second round of funding amounting to $25 million was earmarked by the EDA to further invest in workforce training programs that are critical to U.S. competitiveness. The EDA anticipates making 5-8 awards ranging from $1 million to $8 million, with grantee announcements expected by winter 2024. “The Good Jobs Challenge is placing thousands of workers into quality jobs, creating new opportunities for Americans,” acting Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Cristina Killingsworth told in the
