Gov. Abbott Hosts Irish Ambassador in Texas to Bolster Economic and Cultural Ties

Geraldine Byrne Nason, Ireland’s ambassador to the United States, was recently invited by Texas Governor Greg Abbott at the Governor’s Mansion to deepen relations with an emphasis on the economic game. According to the Office of the Texas Governor, this was the ambassador’s first official visit to the Lone Star State and her first meeting with the governor.

Their chinwag revolved around growing already prosperous cultural and economic ties, with a focus on industries like technology, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and those crucial semiconductors. Later this week, Ambassador Byrne Nason is aiming for the Texas Medical Center, which Governor Abbott claims is the largest of its kind in the world thanks to its gleaming new TMC3 state-of-the-art research facility. Byrne Nason is scheduled to meet with some of the brightest minds in white coats there.

Health and technology weren’t the only topics. In their discussion of China’s expanding economic sway in the global south, Governor Abbott and Ambassador Byrne Nason concurred that it is critical for national security that Texas and Ireland continue to have robust trade.

Gov. Abbott and Ambassador Byrne Nason recalled the historic ties between their peoples, including the Irish-Texans who fought at the Alamo and San Jacinto during Texas’ struggle for independence, after talking about business and security. They celebrated by exchanging gifts; Byrne Nason brought home a box with the Texas State Seal, while Abbott was given cufflinks with harp themes.
