A driver from Hancock County was charged with reckless driving after a high-speed pursuit and was given a 20-day jail sentence today. The person was caught speeding at 110 mph in a construction zone on Interstate 70 in Greenfield, where the speed limit is strictly regulated at 55 mph, according to WTHR. According to Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine, the driver was pulled over by Trooper Nick Cox yesterday and was charged with reckless driving and speeding in a construction zone.
The driver was able to bond out that same evening in spite of the seriousness of the offense. His reprieve was brief, though, as he appeared in court the following day and entered a guilty plea to the allegations brought against him. In an update from WTHR, Sgt. Perrine praised the promptness of the legal proceedings. “Because of the great work of Prosecutor Brent Eaton and his team of Deputy Prosecutors along with Hancock Superior Court, the driver was sentenced to 20 days in jail (starting today), 345 days of probation and a 60 day license suspension, along with fines and court costs,” Perrine said in a statement.
Such high-speed violations are guarded against by Indiana’s Work Zone Safety Law, particularly in locations where construction workers are present. According to additional research by WISHTV, vehicles who speed in construction zones are subject to a tiered penalty structure under the statute, with the first offense carrying a $300 fine.
Furthermore, individuals who consistently drive dangerously in work zones may be subject to harsher penalties. Driving through a work zone carelessly or forcefully carries a $5,000 fine, while murdering or seriously hurting a highway worker carries a $10,000 fine and a maximum jail term of six years. According to FOX59, this information demonstrates the state’s dedication to protecting construction sites and their workers from the dangers of careless driving.
