Willie Byrd, 61, was found guilty by a jury in the Superior Court of Washington, D.C., for stabbing a man in Northwest DC last year after an attempted robbery that became violent. The U.S. Department of Justice said on November 20 that Byrd was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault while armed. On January 31, 2025, Honorable Judge Michael O’Keefe has scheduled the sentencing.
Byrd attempted to steal money from the victim on the evening of February 28, 2023, close to 2nd and D Streets N.W., after getting caught up in a shady drug deal. The U.S. Attorney’s Office reports that the defendant, carrying a big fixed-blade knife, stabbed the victim at approximately 8:30 p.m., causing life-threatening injuries that required surgery and an extended hospital stay.
Officers and detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department thoroughly examined surveillance footage taken from the area around the Federal City Shelter after the stabbing, which helped lead to Byrd’s capture. Armed with the camera footage, MPD officers were able to find Byrd hiding within the shelter and took him into custody right away.
MPD Chief Pamela A. Smith and U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves thanked the hardworking MPD team for their investigation efforts. Additionally, they acknowledged Assistant United States Attorney Gregory Evans for his involvement in the inquiry and praised the prosecutorial work of Assistant United States Attorneys Ella Gladman and Erica Rudolf.
