GRANT COUNTY, WA – In a series of chaotic events, a 21-year-old woman from Washington allegedly kidnapped a baby, stole two vehicles—including a police car—and led authorities on a wild chase that could have ended in tragedy.
The incident began around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Warden, WA, when police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle taken from Main Street. Making the situation even more alarming, a 2-month-old infant was inside the car when it was stolen.
Using traffic cameras, officers tracked the stolen car traveling north on Road U-Southeast, heading toward rural Moses Lake, about 12 miles away.
Erratic Driving and Initial Arrest
Not long after the alert went out, another call came in reporting that a vehicle matching the stolen car’s description was spotted driving dangerously—swerving on and off the road—near Road 3-Northeast and Road S-Northeast.
A deputy from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and found the stolen vehicle stopped in the middle of Road 3-Northeast, between Road S-Northeast and Road T-Northeast. Authorities arrested the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Rita Gabriella Lozano, and secured her in the back of a Warden Police vehicle.
The infant, fortunately unharmed, was safely reunited with family members after the ordeal.

Dramatic Escape in a Police Vehicle
The situation escalated when Lozano, handcuffed and locked in the back of the police car, managed to slip into the driver’s seat. According to a sheriff’s office update, Lozano had “contorted her body to move her cuffed hands to the front.”
Lozano took control of the running police vehicle—standard practice for law enforcement vehicles to keep onboard systems operational—and attempted to flee. Deputies pursued her and pinned the stolen police vehicle half a mile away using two patrol cars.
Injuries and Damage
During the incident, one deputy sustained minor injuries, and three law enforcement vehicles were damaged. Authorities believe Lozano “was possibly under the influence of an unknown substance” at the time.
Following her arrest, Lozano was transported to Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake for a medical evaluation.
Charges and Investigation
Lozano now faces several serious charges, including:
- Second-degree kidnapping
- Reckless endangerment
- Theft of a motor vehicle
After receiving medical attention, Lozano was booked into the Grant County Jail, where she remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Authorities Reviewing Incident
Authorities are now reviewing the incident to determine how Lozano managed to maneuver within the police vehicle while handcuffed and whether any procedural changes are needed. Though no one was seriously hurt, the brazen nature of her escape raises serious questions about what could have gone wrong—and highlights the fine line officers walk between routine arrests and sudden chaos.
