Health Advisory Issued for High Bacterial Levels at Popular Los Angeles and Malibu Beaches

Beachgoers who intend to swim in specific coastal waters are being warned by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to exercise caution. The most recent public announcements state that bacterial levels in a number of well-known locations have prompted ocean water usage advisories because they exceed acceptable health requirements.

The Pico-Kenter storm drain at Santa Monica Beach, Big Rock Beach in Malibu, and the whole swimming area at Mothers Beach and Inner Cabrillo Beach are among the places on the alert list. According to the department’s explicit guidelines, locations such as the Santa Monica Pier and the Marie Canyon Storm Drain near Puerco Beach should be kept 100 yards or less away. To minimize any health hazards, you might want to reconsider and move your beach chair if you want to place it close to the Strand Street extension at Santa Monica Beach or the 28th Street extension in Manhattan Beach.

Recently, some locations that had water quality readings that actually complied with state guidelines were removed from the list. Beachgoers are now returning to enjoy some sun at the Santa Monica storm drain on Ashland Avenue and the Hermosa Beach storm drain on Herondo Street. Furthermore, the Windward storm drain at Venice Beach has also received the all-clear, according a recent notification.

If you prefer to be informed at all times, pick up your phone and call the County’s beach closure hotline at 1-800-525-5662, which is open twenty-four hours a day.
