A 15-year-old high school student in Dearborn is in critical condition after being hit by a car while crossing the street.
Police say a 19-year-old driver ran a red light, hitting the girl at Ford Road and Schaefer Road early Friday morning.
The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on December 20 when the Fordson High School student was legally crossing the road. The car, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling west and didn’t stop in time.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, giving medical help at the scene. The girl was rushed to the hospital, where she had surgery. She is still in critical condition.
After reviewing the footage, investigators said the driver was speeding and didn’t stop at the red light. The Jeep also had illegal tint on its windshield, which could have made it harder to see clearly.
Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud spoke about the accident, calling it a “tragic” event. He also asked the community to pray for the girl and her family, especially her sister, who saw the crash happen.
The mayor promised to improve safety at the intersection by working with traffic engineers to study the area and make changes.
Mayor Hammoud urged parents to talk to young drivers about being responsible on the road. “We all need to work together to stop reckless driving and keep our roads safe,” he said.
The Dearborn Police Chief, Issa Shahin, said the investigation is ongoing, and all evidence will be sent to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges. He also thanked local businesses for sharing security footage that helped the investigation.
The school district is offering grief counseling to students and staff affected by the incident.
Chief Shahin added, “This crash could have been avoided if traffic safety laws were followed. We will keep working hard to hold reckless drivers accountable and protect everyone on our roads.”
