Hickory Hill to Enhance Security with 25 New Surveillance Cameras, Memphis Officials Seek Public Input on Deployment

Residents of the district are getting ready for more neighborhood surveillance as local authorities implement a new surveillance system in an attempt to combat crime in Hickory Hill. Shelby County Commissioner Miska Clay Bibbs announced the installation of 25 new cameras throughout the city during a town hall meeting, according to Action News 5.

A prominent retail camera is part of the surveillance system; it is a mobile device that can be moved to strategic spots as needed, particularly during the hectic holiday season when more people are shopping. Details that Local Memphis was able to collect indicate that the county’s investment in the Sky Cop camera systems is mostly financed by the county investment fund. Regarding the positioning of these cameras, the public is also being consulted.

Commissioner Bibbs, the county’s District 11 representative, emphasized the significance of the cameras and the pressing nature of the situation: “Anything that we can do to deter crime is the issue,” she said in a statement supported by The Daily Memphian.

As early as next week, one main camera system unit is anticipated to be operational in the area as part of the initial deployment, with more units to follow. Residents of Hickory Hill will have the chance to provide input on the camera placement through additional talks and public input events. The county will use this feedback to help direct its efforts to set up a surveillance network throughout the region. Future fiscal allocations may also provide extra funding, and Bibbs expressed optimism for increased assistance in the upcoming year.
