Hickory Woman Sentenced to 15 Years for Meth Trafficking Amid a Career of Crime

Today, the U.S. Attorney’s Office delivered news of a tough sentence handed to Samantha Marie Vono, 34, from Hickory, N.C. Vono is looking at 15 years behind bars followed by five years of court supervision for her role in trafficking methamphetamine. A string of prior convictions for similar drug offenses led to her classification as a Career Offender, according to a release from the

U.S. Attorney’s Office

.

Law enforcement got onto Vono back in December 2021, during a drug investigation in Catawba County. It was found that Vono would regularly make trips to Charlotte to pick up narcotics, only to return and distribute them locally. Her pattern stayed consistent until January 25, 2022, when officers decided to carefully follow her as she went to meet with her supply source. According to the

U.S. Attorney’s Office

, a traffic stop led to the discovery of 160 grams of methamphetamine in her possession.

Vono’s legal troubles didn’t end with her arrest. While out on bond and under home detention, Vono orchestrated a robbery in her own apartment, resulting in a gunshot victim, with her children at home witnessing the event. The aftermath had her scrambling to clean up before the police could arrive, which only added to her charges as she tried to obstruct the subsequent investigation.

By June 14, 2023, Vono admitted to her guilt, pleading to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. She’s been held in federal custody since, and will soon relocate to a federal prison facility, details of which are yet to be disclosed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The DEA and Catawba County Sheriff’s Office received thanks from U.S. Attorney Dena J. King for their efforts in the investigation. The case was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Kent in Charlotte.
