Indianapolis, IN – A traffic stop on Monday afternoon escalated into a high-speed chase and an officer-involved shooting, leaving the suspect dead and causing damage to multiple vehicles on the city’s east side.
The incident began around 4 p.m. when Lawrence Police attempted to stop a vehicle on Pendleton Pike, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). A female passenger exited the car during the initial stop and remained at the scene. However, the male driver fled, prompting a pursuit that spanned several streets.
Shots Fired During Pursuit
As the chase progressed, authorities reported that shots were fired from the suspect’s vehicle at pursuing officers. The pursuit ended in the 6500 block of East 30th Street when the suspect failed to comply with officers’ repeated commands.
Lawrence Police and IMPD officers discharged their firearms after the suspect’s refusal to cooperate. To ensure the safety of all parties, officers used a drone and armored vehicles to approach the vehicle. Upon reaching the car, they discovered the suspect unresponsive. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Firearm Recovered; No Injuries Reported
A firearm was recovered near the suspect’s vehicle. Despite the exchange of gunfire, no officers or civilians were injured during the incident. However, multiple vehicles in the vicinity sustained damage from stray bullets.
Residents who discover any gunfire-related damage to their property are encouraged to report it by calling 911.
Investigation Underway
The Marion County Coroner’s Office is working to determine the exact cause of the suspect’s death. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol, pending investigations by the IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team and the Use of Force Review Board.
