, the chase in Wake County began when a Hyundai Elantra, later discovered to be stolen, refused to stop for deputies on Interstate 40 post-rush hour. The driver lost control near Cary Towne Boulevard and the car crashed into a tree. Injuries sustained by the driver and four juvenile passengers were described as non-life-threatening.

Another chase reportedly took place when a State Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop a black Chrysler Pacifica, driven by 27-year-old Michael Devon Hester Jr., for a seatbelt violation. The refusal to stop quickly escalated into a cross-county chase that ended near downtown Durham. Although initially apprehended, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office saw fit to further pursue Hester.

. Both sources confirmed that five juveniles were hospitalized after the stolen vehicle they were in ended up crashing on the on-ramp to I-40 at Cary Towne Boulevard. No additional vehicles were involved in the incident.
