Reckling found the stolen car in Detroit, according to the authorities, and when the driver abruptly stopped, people got out of the car and started shooting.

Sheriff Bouchard of Oakland County described the incident as a “ambush.” Recking was operating an unmarked car without a dash camera.

He was a nine-year department veteran and leaves behind a wife and three children, ages five, four, and one, with a fourth on the way.

Three charges of lying to the police and one count of resisting arrest have been brought against an 18-year-old guy. Reckling’s murder has not been the subject of any charges.
