Hinsdale South High School Student Charged with Bringing Loaded Gun to School, Detained Pending December Court Date

Authorities have detained a 16-year-old student from Willowbrook’s Hinsdale South High School on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm to class. A news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office states that the minor, whose identity has not been revealed because of his age, is charged with both unlawful possession of a firearm under the age of eighteen and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in a public school. Judge Chantelle Porter ordered his detention at a hearing, with a follow-up court appearance set for December 2.

The teenager was arrested at Hinsdale South High School after school authorities promptly notified law enforcement of a tip they received on November 21. According to reports, he was in possession of a 9mm Taurus GX-4 handgun. According to Robert Berlin, who was stated by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, “There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for a sixteen-year-old boy to be in possession of a loaded firearm, particularly at a school, as alleged in this case.”

The student’s arrest is a sobering reminder of persistent worries about firearms in classrooms. “My office takes any sign of potential violence involving a school very seriously,” Berlin said, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Bethany Jackson, the assistant state’s attorney, was commended for her efforts to keep schools safe places for education and growth.

Even though the charges have garnered attention, it’s crucial to keep in mind that they are merely accusations and not evidence of guilt. The accused must be presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law, according to the principles of justice.
