Florida police report that a Honduran man accidentally shot off his own finger while attempting a murder.

A man from Honduras accidentally shot off his own finger while trying to commit murder over the weekend, as reported by the Haines City Police Department.

Police reported that the incident occurred on Sunday at approximately 5:45 p.m. close to Tennessee Street within the city limits. A local homeowner called 911 to report that someone had been shot on their property.

Officers arrived at the residence and discovered a 42-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to the report. He was hospitalized with significant injuries, but he is anticipated to make a recovery.

On Monday, authorities revealed that their investigation has identified 40-year-old Jervin Romero as the suspect in the shooting.

Investigators report that Romero and his ex-partner of more than two decades were experiencing a challenging separation, during which Romero allegedly sent her messages containing threats of “violence and death.”

On Sunday, Romero notified his former partner that he would be arriving at her residence, according to investigators.

Authorities reported that Romero approached the front door that evening, but when the residents did not respond, he went around to the back, took off a screen, and entered through a window.

Police reported that Romero shot the boyfriend five times, hitting his hand, chest, shoulder, and grazing his head. However, in the process, Romero accidentally shot off his own ring finger, according to police reports.

Police managed to locate and apprehend Romero behind some trees less than a mile from the shooting scene, as reported by the police department.

Romero is now facing serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder, armed burglary with assault or battery, making written threats to kill or injure, unlawful use of a two-way communication device, and resisting an officer without violence.

Authorities revealed that Romero, a Honduran national, is in the country without legal status and had previously been banned from the property in November, with instructions not to come back.

Investigators observed that there were no official records filed with law enforcement regarding the threats issued by Romero against his former partner and her boyfriend.
