Honolulu’s Trade Winds Slowing Down, NWS Predicts Drier Weather Ahead

The National Weather Service reports that trade winds in Honolulu are weakening and will continue to decrease over the next few days. Windward and higher elevation areas may still see occasional showers, with some reaching leeward communities.

According to theNational Weather Service, an upper low near Big Island may bring heavier showers to the eastern half of the state through tomorrow. By Wednesday, drier and more stable weather is expected, with mainly dry conditions and light winds forecast from Thursday through the weekend.

The aviation community should stay alert as breezy trade winds continue this afternoon, possibly causing reduced visibility and ceilings in windward and higher terrain areas. Leeward sides are expected to have clearer conditions with fewer showers. TheNational WeatherService has issued an AIRMET Tango for the day, warning of moderate low-level turbulence near island terrain.

Marine conditions are influenced by a high-pressure system shifting southeast today. While the Gale Warning has ended, a Small Craft Advisory remains for most windward waters, bays, and channels. Trade winds are expected to weaken below advisory levels by early Tuesday. However, rough and choppy surf on east-facing shores will persist for the next few days, prompting a High Surf Advisory.

TheNational Weather Servicewarns that high tides and strong trade winds today could cause minor coastal flooding in vulnerable areas. A Coastal Flood Statement is in effect through this morning. For surfers, the northwest swell will decrease by evening, with only small to moderate north swells expected later in the week.
