Tony Buzbee, a Houston-based personal injury lawyer who brought numerous civil lawsuits against music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, is now facing a lawsuit alleging an extortion attempt, which has taken a new turn in an ongoing court battle. The Buzbee Law Firm and Buzbee have been accused of “shamelessly attempting to extort exorbitant sums” from Combs by an unknown plaintiff, identified only as John Doe, who has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles, according to a report by ABC7NY.
According to the John Doe plaintiff’s legal lawsuit, which is full of grave accusations, Buzbee’s company threatened to publish “entirely fabricated and malicious allegations of sexual assault” against him if he did not pay them, according to CW39. The plaintiff also claims that after accusing him of horrible deeds in several written demands, Buzbee advised him to pay in order to avoid going to court.
The plaintiff’s situation is described in the complaint as having a “gun to his head” and the potential emotional and reputational consequences of acting on these alleged threats. On the grounds of deliberate infliction of mental distress and extortion, the plaintiffs are requesting damages. According to ABC7NY, the plaintiff’s attorneys, Michael Lifrak and Mari Henderson of Quinn Emanuel, have imitated Buzbee’s earlier strategies by requesting any material about Buzbee that could support their position.
In a statement provided to ABCNY, Buzbee called the lawsuit “laughable” and rejected the charges as baseless. He described the letters he wrote as standard legal correspondence and denied making any threats or financial demands. “It is obvious that the frivolous lawsuit filed against my firm is an aggressive attempt to intimidate or silence me and ultimately my clients,” said Buzbee. The lawyer who filed the several accusations against Combs is currently embroiled in a legal battle that is as complicated as the lawsuits he has brought.
Combs is being accused separately of trying to sabotage his own case at the same time as the legal battle with Buzbee. According to ABC7NY, prosecutors allege that while in detention, Combs organized social media campaigns, disclosed defense-related materials, and spoke with witnesses via intermediaries. Combs’ legal predicament has been made more difficult by unlawful phone calls made using other prisoners’ accounts and incriminating notes discovered in his cell.
