Houston Havoc Averted as Local Suspected of Aiding ISIS in Terror Plot Takedown

An arrest in West Houston last week showcased the takedown of 28-year-old Anas Said, a man accused of attempting to provide material support to ISIS. As reported byClick2Houston, the arrest escalated when Said allegedly smashed his phone and attempted to flee FBI agents.

Said, a native Houstonian, is charged with offering material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. According to a statement from theU.S. Attorney s Office, his social media accounts and seized electronic devices provided evidence of his support and propaganda efforts for ISIS.

The investigation, led by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, brought to light Said’s alleged plans to target military personnel and individuals with connections to Israel. During an interview with FBI agents, Said admitted intentions to commit a mass killing in Houston and offered his home to ISIS operatives, according to Special Agent Douglas Williams Jr. in court.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Said’s attorney, Baldemar Zuniga, has emphasized the indictment’s focus on the creation of videos and propaganda. “Despite allegations that my client made statements to government agents regarding proposed terrorist acts, the indictment does not currently allege any planning, or acts, of terrorism,” Zuniga released in a statement, whichClick2Houstonobtained. The validity of these claims will no doubt be tested in court as Said faces a sentence of up to 20 years and fines up to $250,000 if convicted.

Local law enforcement’s effort on case highlights the collaborative work of various agencies, including Houston and Sugar Land Police Departments, Harris County Sheriff s Office, and federal partners. Said’s detention hearing is set before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Bray, though additional details about the proceedings have not yet been disclosed.
