Houston Home Scene of Repeat Animal Hoarding Case with 50 Rescues and Deceased Pets Found in Galveston

In a disturbing case of animal hoarding in Houston, nearly 50 animals were rescued from abhorrent living conditions in a North Houston home. As reported by Click2Houston, this is not the first time this property has been the focus of a rescue operation; a similar situation unfolded eight years prior with 32 dogs being saved from neglect.

Authorities discovered 13 dogs, 10 cats, one rabbit, and 25 fowl confined to wire kennels and struggling to survive in areas littered with trash, urine, and feces. Despite the gruesome scene and the apparent neglect, no charges are currently being filed against the hoarder because the case was deemed one of an individual overwhelmed by the number of stray animals they attempted to house. “It’s critical that we work closely with law enforcement in nine surrounding counties to help keep tabs on properties hoarding animals as it is common they become repeat offenders. The horrific living conditions do nothing but create a world of neglect and suffering for the animals,” Chief of Animal Cruelty at the Houston SPCA Josh Sailor told Click2Houston.

A tip led officials to a tragic discovery in San Leon, where the Houston SPCA, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, and Animal Services found a severe animal cruelty case. They discovered around 50 dead cats and a large dog on the property.

Amid ankle-deep debris, cages, and kennels, there were survivors: four cats and a severely malnourished 30-year-old Percheron horse, almost hidden in the overgrown grass despite her large size, as noted by Joshua Sailor from the Houston SPCA. Sailor described the scene as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty they had encountered.

The animals that were rescued from both properties are now in the care of the Houston SPCA, where they are receiving veterinary treatments. A custody hearing for the North Houston animals will take place next week, determining their future. Meanwhile, the Galveston survivors are with the Galveston County Animal Services and the Houston SPCA, where they continue their recovery.
