Houston Man Accused of Capital Murder Remains in Custody as Bond Unaltered

Antonio Guzman, 22, of Houston, made his first court appearance today after being charged with his uncle Jose Torres’ capital murder. Last Monday, the body of 37-year-old Torres, a police dispatcher for Spring Branch ISD, was discovered at his residence in northwest Harris County. According to KHOU, a judge has decided not to reduce Guzman’s $200,000 bond, keeping him in detention at the Harris County Jail.

After the court hearing, defense lawyer Kimberly McTorry, who is representing Guzman, said that even though her client reportedly admitted to the crime, she is still innocent until proven guilty. McTorry intends to thoroughly examine the state’s evidence. I’ll examine the evidence as soon as I get it from the state and confirm that he was appropriately informed of his Miranda rights at the time of the statement. Furthermore, McTorry informed KHOU that when obtaining this statement, law officers did not in any way violate his constitutional rights and remained within the parameters of the document. On January 28, Guzman is scheduled to appear in court again.

According to investigational details, on the day of the murder, Torres failed to pick up his wife and kids from school. When the family returned home after receiving a ride from another family member, they discovered Torres’ dead. It is thought that before he was shot and killed, Torres, who had been working outside his house, went inside to get another piece of equipment. At the location, shell casings were found. Additionally, certain items from Torres’ house were reported gone, according to FOX26Houston.

Authorities in Harris County apprehended Guzman on Sunday in the 7200 block of Fairbanks North Houston Road after a two-day hunt. Guzman allegedly told officials that he committed the crime because he felt “unloved and unwelcome.” According to official reports, Guzman had been treated like a son by Torres and his wife for the past six years. Video footage points to the shooter’s hobbling departure from the scene, which is consistent with Guzman’s alleged foot injury. According to a statement obtained by KHOU, “Guzman admitted to going to Torres’ house and shooting him when they were alone when he was taken into custody, according to authorities.”
