All westbound lanes of the Katy Freeway within the 610 West Loop were closed due to a fatal collision earlier today, causing major delays for Houston commuters. Just before 3:30 a.m., a Mazda 3, a stalled Texas Department of Transportation truck, and another car collided close to Washington Avenue/Westcott Street, according to Click2Houston.
Two people were killed in the collision: an 8–10-year-old girl and a woman who was thought to be between 46 and 48 years old. For unclear reasons, the victims were in a vehicle that was parked on the freeway’s shoulder. According toClick2Houston, “the passenger of the Mazda 3 was transported to the hospital for evaluation, while the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.”
Additionally, a TxDOT employee was hurt in the incident but is anticipated to get well. While HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division continues their investigation, traffic has been rerouted at Washington Avenue, and westbound lanes of I-10 are still closed.According to KHOU, vehicles are advised to avoid the closure by using alternate roads including Memorial Drive, Washington Avenue, or Allen Parkway; however, there may be an increase in traffic on these routes.
As the event is still being investigated, commuters are encouraged to give themselves more time or think about taking a different route; authorities will disclose more information soon, KHOU said.
