Houston’s Iconic Astrodome’s Future Uncertain as Harris County Explores Restoration vs. Demolition Options

The Astrodome’s future is being reevaluated because the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation (HCSCC) has hired a study to investigate whether it should be demolished or renovated. Houston-based Kirksey Architecture has been tasked with comparing the prices of two possibilities for the landmark building: either rehabilitating the building’s necessary utilities, such as the HVAC and plumbing systems, to make it functional, or assessing the costs associated with demolishing it.

According to a KHOU article, the research would focus on “fundamental systems” to restore the Astrodome to a minimal level of operation while offering an evaluation that falls short of complete historic preservation. The project is in line with HCSCC’s continuous efforts to guarantee that the NRG Park amenities continue to effectively serve Harris County’s citizens. The study will also include a comparative cost analysis for demolition. He said, “The Astrodome has been a symbol of Houston’s innovation and community pride for decades, since 1965,” said HCSCC Chairman Bishop James Dixon.

The analysis of possibilities coincides with an initiative by the Astrodome Conservancy to promote a makeover of the famous dome. This plan, called “Vision: Astrodome,” is being considered as part of HCSCC’s NRG Park master planning process. According to Click2Houston, the study’s results, which are anticipated in a few months, will be vital in determining whether Houstonians will say goodbye to their “Eighth Wonder of the World” or whether the Astrodome can be realistically repurposed for the future.
