I-35E Chase Leaves One Dead, Another Critically Injured Before Police Shoot Armed Suspect

RED OAK, Texas(DDN) – The southbound lanes of I-35E were closed in Red Oak on Thursday morning due to a police chase that resulted in a fatal wreck and subsequently a reported officer-involved shooting, officials said.

According to WFAA, a guy wanted for a homicide in Dallas on Dec. 30 was discovered by a DEA task force member at a QT gas station with his girlfriend, leading authorities on a chase from Dallas County into Ellis County. According to sources, the girlfriend drove the car until the man ordered her to stop and get out while holding her at gunpoint.

According to sources, the chase continued until the suspect collided with a couple driving their car in Red Oak. According to WFAA, the man driving the automobile died, while the woman was brought to the hospital in critical condition.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the suspect got out of the car with a gun in his hand. According to WFAA, the suspect turned to face the officers, who opened fire and shot him. According to sources, one police shot him, then another officer shot him as he went for his gun on the ground.

The suspect’s health is unknown, however, DPS verified he was taken to an area hospital.

Dallas police sources stated the Texas Rangers had taken up the investigation into the officer-involved shooting because it occurred in Dallas County.

Red Oak is approximately 20 miles south of Dallas. The southbound highway lanes remained restricted into the early afternoon hours. The Texas Department of Public Safety reopened I-35 southbound near the Red Oak Road Bridge around 6 p.m. Thursday.

According to Dallas police sources, the man was wanted in connection with a homicide on December 30, 2024. A 36-year-old male was killed in a gunshot in the 7300 block of Skillman St, according to a DPD news release.

Dallas police tell WFAA that the Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the gunshot, while the Red Oak Police Department is investigating the crash.
