I-64 Collision Kills One Man and Injures Another After Wrong-way Dodge Ram Strikes Honda Accord

ST. LOUIS(DDN) – A wrong-way driver caused a horrific crash on Interstate 64 near downtown late Friday morning, killing one man and injuring another.

Around 1:45 a.m., a Dodge Ram, a Honda Accord, and a Toyota Camry collided on westbound I-64 near Jefferson Avenue.

According to police, the collision occurred when the driver of the Dodge Ram drove on the wrong side of the highway, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-64, colliding head-on with the Honda Accord. Following the crash, one of the automobiles collided with the Toyota Camry.

“When you have two vehicles traveling at or above highway speeds in the opposite direction, it is pretty much physics that the collision will be catastrophic,” said Lt. Paul Lauer, Commander of the Traffic Safety Division.

According to police, the hit caused the Dodge Ram to flip and slashed the Honda Accord in two, killing the driver.

The driver of the Honda Accord, an unidentified guy, was pronounced dead on the spot. The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 22-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The driver of the Toyota Camry, a 41-year-old guy, was not wounded in the collision.

The westbound side of the highway was closed for an extended amount of time from 22nd Street to Forest Park Parkway as police investigated and cleaned up the site, which was littered with debris from the wreck.

“That will be part of our inquiry to see if there was an impairment. If we can obtain some form of blood testing from the hospital and determine whether he was impaired, it will undoubtedly be part of the allegations. “Just driving the wrong way down the highway is reckless,” remarked Lauer.

The identity of the individual driving the Honda Accord will be revealed once the identification process is completed.
