LAFAYETTE, Ind. (DDN) – A driver was arrested Thursday morning after crashing his automobile and killing a passenger on I-65 southeast of Lafayette, according to Indiana State Police.

The passenger’s identity was being withheld pending definitive identification by the Tippecanoe County coroner and notification of their nearest of kin.

Framber Monserrat, 29, of Chicago, was arrested and charged with three felonies: operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in death, negligence of a dependent causing bodily harm, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a minor. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of driving while inebriated.

The single-vehicle incident was reported to state police and the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office at 10 a.m. Thursday on I-65 northbound, little over 7 miles north of the State Road 28 exit for Frankfort and Attica.

Investigators suspect the 2008 Hyundai Accent drifted onto the shoulder on the west side of the road for unclear reasons. The driver overcorrected, leading the vehicle to cross back over the northbound lanes before exiting the freeway on the eastern side. The vehicle flipped over and came to a stop on its roof.

The car’s passenger perished at the scene of the incident. Monserrat and a juvenile passenger were sent to a Lafayette hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

Sgt. Jeremy Piers, a public information officer for the state police, stated in a news release that a trooper acquired “information leading him to believe that Monserrat was under the influence at the time of the crash.” After being released from the hospital, Monserrat was arrested and transferred to the Tippecanoe County Jail.

Monserrat remained in prison on Thursday afternoon. On Thursday afternoon, online court records did not reflect a case for Monserrat.
