I-880 Maintenance Project in Bay Area Paused Due to Weather, Caltrans Announces Resumption for April 2025

Because of weather concerns, Caltrans has placed a temporary halt to the Interstate 880 Capital Preventive Maintenance project. The project intends to prolong pavement life and improve ride quality over 90 lane miles, leading the way in upgrades along a section of I-880 from Fremont Boulevard south to the Alameda County/Santa Clara County line.

Operations are halted until early April 2025 “due to anticipated low temperatures and potential rain, which would impact paving quality,” according to Caltrans. The tentative date of the resumption is April 7, 2025.

Caltrans reports that from Dixon Landing Road to Mowry Avenue, the north and southbound lanes have been completely resurfaced and permanently striped. It is still planned to complete the paving between Mowry Avenue and Alvarado Boulevard by the end of the summer of 2025. These improvements go beyond appearances. These include important safety upgrades including installing flashing beacons for pedestrians, updating curb ramps to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and improving traffic systems and guardrails.

Caltrans also has a 24-hour highway condition information line, which may be reached by calling 1-800-427-ROAD (1-800-427-7623), for individuals who would like a more individualized touch to their travel updates.
