I-95 Accident Leaves Autistic Woman Dead, Driver Faces DWI Charges in Johnston County

DDN – A 22-year-old woman with special needs was struck and murdered on I-95 in Johnston County Friday night.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a family had pulled over on the northbound side of Interstate 95.

Their autistic daughter exited the van, crossed the highway into the southbound lanes, and was hit by a pickup truck. She died of her injuries.

Her mother was rushed to the hospital for emotional anguish. The driver remained at the scene and was charged with DWI but not for the accident.

The crash that closed all southbound lanes near Kenly 107 and US 301 has been cleaned, and the lanes are back open.

An investigation is ongoing, and WRAL News is gathering additional information.
