ADDISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A suburban Detroit couple perished days apart in separate accidents between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Scott Levitan, 66, was taken off life support Tuesday afternoon at a hospital after falling through the ice while fishing on a tiny lake north of Detroit on Thursday, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
About 24 hours later, Mary Lou Levitan, 66, was murdered in a car accident. Investigators suspect she was on her way to pick up her husband’s vehicle when the incident occurred.
Scott Levitan and his 15-year-old grandson were drilling a hole when the lake ice gave way Thursday in Addison Township, according to a sheriff’s office announcement.
Scott Levitan fell in the water. His grandson contacted 911 and fell into the water while attempting to rescue his grandfather. A neighboring resident was able to pull the teen back onto the ice, assisting other rescuers in removing Scott Levitan from the lake.
The teenager was eventually treated and released from a hospital.
Mary Lou Levitan was a rear-seat passenger in a car that was hit head-on by another vehicle that crossed the centerline of an Oakland County road on Friday. The sheriff’s office stated the crash is still under investigation.
The Levitans lived in Livonia, located west of Detroit.
