The Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) and Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) have launched applications for development teams to join the 2025 Supportive Housing Institute in an effort to address homelessness head-on. This action, which was announced earlier today, aims to equip teams to create affordable housing that incorporates supporting services by utilizing federal and state funding sources, such as IHDA’s Permanent supporting Housing (PSH) Development Program.
Governor JB Pritzker stated his administration’s commitment to ending homelessness in the state, per IHDA’s release. “My administration remains committed to reaching functional zero homelessness in Illinois, and the Supportive Housing Institute is key to making that a reality,”Pritzker said. The governor emphasized the importance of the SHI and called on housing development teams around Illinois to apply so they can help change lives by providing supportive and secure homes. Development teams will require a developer, property manager, and a partner in supportive services due to the complexity of affordable housing projects. They will also need to encourage the inclusion of a person with lived experience to provide valuable insights into the project design.
Teams will agree to attend two-day monthly sessions in Springfield for the training, which runs from March through June 2025. According to IHDA Executive Director Kristin Faust’s statement, these workshops will address affordable housing development and give participants the know-how to handle each project’s various aspects, from determining a tenant population to ensuring alignment with federal and state funding eligibility. Faust underlined that people find it difficult to improve their health, find work, and escape the snares of housing insecurity in the absence of a stable living situation.
Not only is SHI accepting applications, but program alumni will also be able to apply for PSH Development Program prizes. Due in part to the excellent outcomes of the SHI graduates, IHDA awarded a record-breaking $123 million earlier this year to create 14 supportive housing initiatives. The success of the SHI was discussed by CSH’s Illinois Director, Angela D. Brooks. “Through participation in SHI, teams will acquire improved skills to create and operate single site, integrated supportive housing projects,” Brooks told Illinois.gov. Brooks continued by outlining how SHI graduates might build a strong network of peers and professionals to help with project development and problem solving, with CSH offering continuing technical support.
