Illinois Man Pleads Guilty to Assaulting Officers During January 6 Capitol Riot

A man from Illinois has pled guilty to assaulting police officers during the Capitol riot on January 6, which turned out to be a turning point in American history. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Robert Giacchetti, 59, of Crystal Lake, appeared before Judge Emmet G. Sullivan and entered an admission to one count of assaulting, resisting, or obstructing certain authorities during the confusion that occurred as Congress convened to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Giacchetti’s involvement in the Capitol breach started when he went to a rally at the Ellipse and then moved to the Capitol, where he was caught on camera hurling obscenities at police officers with a bullhorn. “Where’d you go?!” and “Treason!” were among the things he proceeded to yell as he entered the Capitol building and carried the bullhorn to the Rotunda before entering the Senate Gallery.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is spearheading the prosecution in coordination with the Counterterrorism Section of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division. Their press statement claims that Giacchetti also got into altercations with reporters outside the Capitol, damaging Associated Press equipment and injuring one of them.

Giacchetti was identified as BOLO #201 among the wanted suspects while the investigation, which is being conducted by the FBI’s Chicago and Washington Field Offices, continues. Judge Sullivan has scheduled Giacchetti’s sentencing for June 3, 2025. The U.S. Attorney’s Office reports that since January 6, more than 1,561 people have been charged, including more than 590 for felony assaults against law officers. You can visit the FBI’s website or call 1-800-CALL-FBI to provide tips for the continuing investigation.
