‘I’m not calling you to turn him in’: Father tells 911 he killed roommate for drugging and abusing his daughter

He said that his roommate had abused his adult daughter and given her narcotics, so he called the police to report that he had shot and killed her.

According to court documents, 40-year-old Rodolfo Cateura Nogueras entered a no contest plea in Colfax County District Court to second-degree murder in the killing of 45-year-old Ariel Varella Herrera and second-degree assault in the nonfatal gunshot of a neighbor.

An affidavit details the case that was discovered after a call was received by Colfax County dispatch on April 7 at 11:29 p.m.

The caller, who spoke Spanish and was later identified as Cateura Nogueras, claimed to have a 20-year-old daughter who lived with him and a roommate. According to the affidavit, the roommate was abusing his daughter and giving her narcotics.

He said, “I’m calling to tell you that I shot him in the head and I killed him, not to turn him in.”

The incident took place at a storage facility in Schuyler, around 70 miles west of Omaha, he informed the dispatcher. He claimed that he did not meet up with an officer that evening, despite his desire to speak with one face-to-face at a nearby truck stop.

Outside unit #23, officers discovered a.22 shell casing and blood on the ground at the storage facility. An further spent.22 caliber shell case and blood were observed by a sergeant inside. In the rear of the unit, beneath black plastic tarps, the victim’s body was discovered by authorities.

At 9:33 a.m., several individuals were seen arriving at the storage facility in Varela Herrera’s Dodge Caravan, according to video surveillance footage from a nearby business. The people are then seen entering and exiting storage unit #23 before returning to the van.

Throughout the day, until the van departs at 7:52 p.m., one man is observed outside the van, surveying the area before entering storage unit #23. At 10:19 p.m., the van then makes its way back. There are numerous light flashes in the van while several people are inside, according to the video. A man who looks to be bleeding is seen fleeing the storage facility twenty minutes later.

When that man went to the hospital to get treatment for a gunshot wound, he named the shooter as Cateura Nogueras. The injured man said in the police interview that he had no idea Varella Herrera’s whereabouts.

According to the affidavit, “he stated that he was concerned about Varella Herrera because Cateura Nogueras informed him that Varella Herrera was bound.”

According to court documents, the surviving victim also informed police that he thought Cateura Nogueras had attempted to murder him by shooting him twice, one of which grazed his face and passed through his arm, and the other of which knocked out a tooth that was subsequently discovered on the storage unit’s floor.

Early on the morning of April 8, Cateura Nogueras was located by police in Missouri using his smartphone. His phone was pinging when a deputy in Buchanan, Missouri, found a Pontiac G-6 parked in a general store parking lot. He was accompanied by his daughter. According to court filings, deputies discovered a Phoenix Arms handgun in the car that was chambered in.22 caliber.

On January 22, Cateura-Nogueras is scheduled to be sentenced.
