Indianapolis has been the scene of a notable arrest following a string of incidents involving firearms possession, a fatal crash, and a flight from police officers. Last week, the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force (ICGTF) arrested 19-year-old Eric Simpson on various charges, as confirmed in a Fox59 report.
Simpson’s encounters with law enforcement began in February, when he was originally arrested after being found in possession of a firearm with a machine gun conversion device, as per WISH-TV. The situation escalated in July, when officers observed Simpson, a prohibited person from legally bearing arms, carrying a firearm in downtown Indianapolis. Upon attempting to conduct a traffic stop, Simpson chose to rapidly drive away from the police, initiating a pursuit that police eventually called off.
It was discovered later that Simpson’s high-speed driving ended in a vehicle accident where his car flipped over, leading to one fatality and another passenger sustaining serious injuries. Furthermore, according to information provided by WTHR, Simpson fled the crash scene and was not immediately apprehended by law enforcement. A warrant for his arrest was filed for resisting law enforcement causing death, reckless homicide, and unlawful possession of a gun.
Ultimately, law enforcement officers located and arrested Simpson on October 28 in the 1600 block of Kessler Boulevard North Drive. At the time of his arrest, detectives uncovered over 80 grams of marijuana and a handgun in his possession. Simpson is now facing multiple charges including possession of a machine gun, a Level 5 Felony, dealing in marijuana, resisting law enforcement, and reckless homicide among others. Resisting law enforcement is a Level 3 Felony, potentially carrying a maximum sentence of 16 years in prison in Indiana.
