An Indianapolis man, Roderick Tyrone Bunnell, was arrested yesterday following a standoff in a Johnson County Government Annex parking lot. Bunnell, 42, was wanted on multiple warrants, including a theft charge out of Delaware County and a possession of cocaine charge in Marion County. The situation escalated in the morning when the man refused to comply with law enforcement officers’ requests to exit his vehicle.
A response was coordinated at the government annex parking lot around 9:39 a.m., where Bunnell was seen seated in his white GMC Yukon, according to
FOX59
. With the ongoing situation, deputies with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, accompanied by officers from the Franklin Police Department, approached the vehicle attempting to resolve the issue peacefully. Though they were determined to arrest standing on prior warrants, the compliance they sought from Bunnell initially was met with resistance.
Attempts made by law enforcement to negotiate with Bunnell were met with defiance as he refused to leave his vehicle.
WIBC
reports that the standoff was not resolved quietly, leading officers to take a more direct approach. After issuing several verbal commands asking Bunnell to exit the Yukon and getting no compliance, officers moved to forcibly gain entry into the vehicle.
Deputies eventually accessed Bunnell’s vehicle through the rear hatch, at which point tear gas was deployed. This non-lethal measure was effective in pushing Bunnell to finally exit his vehicle, as detailed by the
WISH-TV
report. Taken into custody without further incident, Bunnell was booked with an additional charge of resisting law enforcement in Johnson County, alongside his prior warrants.
Johnson County Sheriff Duane E. Burgess recognized the efforts of his deputies and the Franklin Police Department, noting in a statement obtained by
FOX59
, “Through the coordinated efforts of our deputies and the Franklin Police Department, we were able to bring this situation to a close without injury and safeguard our community.” Bunnell is currently being held at the Johnson County jail with a bond set at $2,000.
