Irving Tissue Invests $600 Million in Macon Plant Expansion, Adding Jobs to Georgia’s Local Economy

The Canadian paper product maker Irving Tissue announced Monday that it would invest $600 million in its current Macon, Georgia, factory. A second paper machine will be added as part of the expansion, which will increase the plant’s output by 50%.According to Fox 5 Atlanta, this calculated action is being taken in reaction to the present demand, which has already used up the facility’s entire manufacturing capacity.

“We’ve had tremendous success in Macon and with the plant currently sold out, this is the right plant for the expansion,” said Marc Doucette, vice president of communications at Irving Tissue, who marked the mill’s fifth anniversary. The company specializes in private-label products for retailers. In addition to increasing output, the expansion will boost the local economy by creating 100 new employment. The increased mill activities, which currently employ 400 people, are expected to produce pay that range from $22 to more than $30 per hour. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, this pay grade corresponds to yearly incomes in the range of $45,760 to $62,400.

The Macon mill currently produces 165,000 tons per year for the corporation. This figure is anticipated to increase to 248,000 tons with the next addition. To transform the tissue into finished goods, the improvement consists of sophisticated converting lines and an automated warehouse. In order to maintain the integrity of the supply chain, business president Robert K. Irving sourced pulp from their Saint John, New Brunswick plant, which was supported by wood from company-owned properties in Maine and New Brunswick.

The new facilities are anticipated to be completed in phases, with the new paper machine going online in 2027 and the warehouse being operational by 2026. In the same statement, Doucette told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that discussions about tax breaks and other potential incentives for the expansion are still going on. Macon-Bibb County property tax rebates and $2 million in state income tax credits are two possible financial advantages for Irving Tissue.

Being a global player with a portfolio that includes shipyards, railroads, media, and an oil firm, Irving Tissue’s decision to expand in Georgia shows how confident the corporation is in the labor market and growth prospects of the state. Irving Tissue, a major contributor to the strategic activities of the family-owned industrial company, is still based in Dieppe, New Brunswick.
