While exploring Manhattan on Saturday, Paolo Rech, an Italian tourist, was attacked. Three blocks from Times Square, on Madison Avenue, a lady randomly cut the 42-year-old professor of computer science. According to a New York Post report, Rech suffered a cut on his right hand in the incident, and the attacker ran away.
Eyewitness News quoted Rech as stating, “I just passed next to her and she just turned around quickly and stabbed me.” He described how the woman appeared to be in a trance, staring blankly at a Wi-Fi kiosk, and then seemed to return to the sign after the attack, lost in her thoughts. Thankfully, Rech, who is in town to speak at NYU, only suffered minor injuries and declined on-scene medical attention.
The attacker was described by witnesses. She was last seen wearing a black jacket, purple sweater, black leggings, and black and white sneakers. She is estimated to be in her 30s and about 5′ 7″. “She just turned around and slashed him,” Omar, a local witness, told the Journal. Omar also reported that the attacker took what looked to be a tiny knife—possibly a box cutter—from her jacket pocket before to the assault.
Residents and tourists alike were alarmed after a Danish tourist was attacked on the Upper West Side a few days prior. Joshua Zinberg, 25, was accused of assault and attempted murder in that instance. “I love New York City – there’s nothing that can change that,” Rech stated in spite of his attack, according to Eyewitness News.
