Jackknifed Big-Rig Causes Major Delays on Bay Bridge, Minor Injuries for Driver

A big-rig tractor-trailer jackknifed across the roadway this morning, causing a major wait for commuters heading east on the Bay Bridge. According to CHP San Francisco, the collision happened at approximately 5:10 a.m. on Interstate 80, just east of the First Street onramp. Four eastbound lanes were blocked as a result of the tractor-trailer facing the other way after the collision.

On the SF/Oakland Bay Bridge, a big-rig tractor-trailer was engaged in a solo car collision earlier this morning at 5:10 am, which caused the big-rig to jack-knife across the four left lanes (#1-4), now facing the other way of I-80 e/b, just E/ of the 1st St. on-ramp.tweet.com/dJ8UpQzgvX

According to the same social media post from CHP San Francisco, the driver was sent to a nearby hospital for preventative care after suffering minor injuries in the collision. After the incident, the CHP projected an ETO (Expected Time of Opening) of 60 to 75 minutes, however that estimate was later revised to 30 to 60 minutes. Drivers were urged to use caution and, if feasible, look for other routes during a rainy morning commute.

Additional information was given by the San Francisco Standard, which stated that the vehicle did not overturn despite suffering significant front-end damage. Traffic cameras recorded long lines of cars backed up in the rain, and the impact on traffic was significant, with lanes being stopped for several hours following the crash.

As CHP San Francisco noted, lane #3 was later reopened to traffic; however, lanes #1 and #2 were restricted for a longer period of time while cleanup proceeded. According to CHP San Francisco, drivers were commended for their patience and cautioned to drive cautiously due to the damp circumstances.
