Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis brought to light a fraudulent insurance scheme involving two Jacksonville employees, detailing their arrest in a recent statement. The CFO’s announcement highlighted the implications of such deceptive practices on ordinary residents, citing that insurance fraud inevitably leads to higher premiums for law-abiding citizens.
As reported bymyfloridacfo.com, Rochell Green and Breana Ferguson, both former employees of the healthcare giant Aetna, are accused of having submitted upwards of 42 fabricated insurance claims over four years, effectively embezzling more than $1.1 million. Patronis, expressing his astonishment, stated, “It s amazing the lengths bad actors will go to commit fraud and scam the system to make a quick buck.” The CFO equally extended gratitude towards his Insurance Fraud detectives for their roles in halting these individuals’ activities.
Details from the CFO’s office outline that the investigation by the Florida Department of Financial Services’ Criminal Investigations Division began ambitiously on February 9, 2024, unraveling the depth of the scheme. Both culprits were deeply familiar with the insurance claim process at Aetna, contriving to concoct fraudulent claims supported by sham documentation. Arrest warrants were subsequently issued on October 22, 2024, leading to Green’s arrest on October 25th and Ferguson’s arrest just last Friday, November 8th.
The ex-Aetna employees were charged with False Insurance Claims and Scheme to Defraud, crimes that could result in them being sentenced to a maximum of 30 years per count if found guilty.
