Jacksonville Sex Offender Indicted for Attempting to Lure Minor Online

Jeremy Wayne Leggett, a 36-year-old registered child sex offender from Jacksonville, was indicted by federal authorities for trying to lure a supposed 13-year-old child into sexual activities using the internet. According to a

Department of Justice announcement

, if convicted of these charges, Leggett is looking at a prison term that ranges from a minimum of 10 years to potential life imprisonment, along with a lifetime of supervised release thereafter.

The charges stem from interactions that commenced on June 16, 2023, when Leggett reportedly took to a social media application to seek out minors for sexual engagement. It was here that an undercover FBI agent, posing as a minor, encountered the user “dAddi”—later identified as Leggett—who asked if the faux child “[l]ike[d] older men,” and even went as far as sending an explicit photo of himself to who he believed was an underage individual. Over the following days, the conversation heated up with Leggett repeatedly trying to coax the “child” into meeting for sex and to exchange more sexually suggestive images.

The situation escalated on June 19, 2023, as Leggett allegedly proceeded to the pre-arranged meeting point at a shopping center in Jacksonville. Upon the attempt of law enforcement officers to make contact, Leggett made a brief attempt to evade arrest by fleeing the scene. He was apprehended shortly thereafter by Jacksonville Sheriff’s officers and FBI agents at a Jacksonville residence. This arrest concludes a joint investigation operation involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and is currently under prosecution by Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown.

It should be noted that an indictment is not a conviction but rather a formal accusation of criminal conduct. As such, Leggett remains innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. Leggett’s indictment falls under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide effort initiated by the Department of Justice in 2006 aimed at addressing the rise in child sexual exploitation and abuse.
