James White, Detroit's Police Chief, Seeks CEO Position at Wayne County Health

James White, the chief of police in Detroit, has submitted an application to become the CEO of the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network.

On Wednesday, White announced that he had submitted an application to the Detroit-based organization for the job.

“It’s an extremely important role at a critical time for Detroit and Wayne County,” White stated. “We continue to have a mental health crisis in our community that needs to be addressed at multiple levels.

“I look forward to a competitive process and want to respect the process by not saying anything further at this time. As the process continues, I am fully committed to serving as Detroit’s Police Chief.”

After James Craig, the previous chief, announced his retirement to pursue a governorship, White was named the new chief of police for Detroit in June 2021.

In 2009, White—who joined the Detroit Police Department in 1996—was appointed assistant police chief for the city. Before taking the helm as CEO, he started his career in 2020 with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

Wayne State University awarded White a bachelor’s degree in sociology. According to the city, he later graduated with a master’s degree in counseling from Central Michigan University and obtained a license as a mental health counselor.
