Jay Leno Sustains Multiple Injuries After Fall in Pittsburgh Area, Still Delivers Performance Hours Later

The popular former host of the “Tonight Show,” Jay Leno, suffered several injuries after a serious accident last week in the Pittsburgh area while trying to get to a local restaurant before a comedy act. Leno suffered a broken wrist, bruising on his face, and an eye patch as a result of the assault, according to WPXI. In an interview with Inside Edition, the comic explained how he fell roughly 60 feet after taking a shortcut down a slope and “hit a bunch of rocks.”

Leno’s performance at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg, despite the terrifying event that left him “all black and blue,” demonstrated his dedication to his art. Daniel Stainer, director of marketing at Westmoreland Cultural Trust, which runs the Palace Theatre, claimed in a statement obtained by TribLIVE that he went on stage just three hours after his fall because “the show must go on,” and he did. Leno described the experience in another interview with TMZ, saying that he chose to go up the slope without realizing how dangerous it was, which resulted in his mishap.

Leno, 74, told Inside Edition that in addition to face injuries and a broken wrist, the incident also caused him to lose a fingernail. With his left eye swelled shut and facial injuries, the left side of his body bore the brunt of the collision. Leno apparently returned to Los Angeles and received medical attention in a hospital following the incident.

Leno was staying at the Hampton Inn Greensburg, but a hotel employee there didn’t know he was there. But once Stainer verified Leno’s lodging off Route 30, the neighborhood has since wished him a speedy recovery and a successful comeback for upcoming performances. According to Stainer, the cultural trust hopes Leno will get well soon and perform again in the future.
