The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Saturday night, with Jeff Petry scoring his first two goals of the season and Ville Husso recording 23 saves for his first win in almost a year.
Petry hadn’t scored since Pittsburgh on April 11. He was acquired in an offseason deal with Montreal and finished the previous season with three goals in 73 games.
Last season’s December 12 was Husso’s most recent triumph. He started the season 0-4-2.
The Red Wings, who won for the second time in eight games, also had goals from Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond. Raymond scored his tenth goal in the previous twelve games with his empty-netter.
Toronto’s goals came from Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies. 22 saves were made by Joseph Woll.
The Maple Leafs, who are usually among the league’s best offensive teams, have lost six straight games with three goals or fewer.
Although he played in the American Hockey League this season, Husso is officially the Red Wings’ third-string goalie and continues to start because Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot are both sidelined.
Just 44 seconds after Knies knotted the score, Petry’s second goal at 1:51 of the third period gave Detroit a 3-2 advantage. J.T. Compher’s rebound was batted in by Petry. This was the 37-year-old defenseman’s ninth game with multiple goals.
In 25 games versus Detroit in his career, Matthews has 18 goals and 33 points.
On Sunday night, the Maple Leafs play Buffalo in the second game of a back-to-back. On Wednesday night, the Red Wings will host Philadelphia.
