Authorities have released the names of two men killed in separate shootings in Jefferson County during a 48-hour period over the Christmas holiday.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the victims as Brandon Montez McIlwain, 35, of Birmingham, and Jerry Dewayne Robinson, 20, also of Birmingham.
The bloodshed began Monday night when the unknown man was shot in eastern Jefferson County.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 11:50 p.m. Monday to a report of a person down in the 200 block of Polly Reed Road, said sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby.
They arrived to find the victim wounded by gunfire. Center Point Fire and Rescue rushed him to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:31 a.m.
No arrests have been announced.
The, nearly 24 hours later, Hoover police at 9:59 p.m. responded to a 911 call at an apartment in the 2200 block of Rime Village Drive.
Lt. Daniel Lowe said officers found McIlwain suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police and firefighters attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at 11:49 p.m. shortly after arriving at UAB Hospital.
Lowe said a 29-year-old male suspect, an acquaintance of the victim, was detained at the scene.
Detectives believe the suspect and victim got into a physical fight inside the apartment. The suspect then fired his gun, striking the victim multiple times.
A motive has not been disclosed.
Detectives will present the evidence to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges.
Birmingham police and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies on Christmas night responded just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to a neighborhood in the 500 block of 26th Avenue N.W.
According to police radio traffic, Robinson was shot in unincorporated Jefferson County and ran a block before collapsing inside the city limits.
He was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:27 p.m.
Because the shooting happened in the unincorporated area, the sheriff’s office will handle the investigation.
No additional details have been released.
So far this year, 195 people have been killed countywide, including 149 in Birmingham.
Anyone with information in the two homicides in unincorporated Jefferson County is asked to call sheriff’s investigators at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
