Kailua-Kona Teen Rider Dies in Collision, Pushing Hawaii’s Traffic Fatality Toll Higher

Hawaii now has 28 traffic fatalities this year after a terrible occurrence in North Kona, when a 19-year-old man from Kailua-Kona died from injuries he received in a two-vehicle collision, according to a report from Nixle. Authorities were alerted to the major collision involving a sport bike and an SUV on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway at approximately 6:42 p.m. on Friday evening.

The exact identity of the deceased is still unknown, and the next of kin has not yet been notified. The young man was riding a green 2024 Kawasaki Ninja southbound when he collided head-on with a silver 2021 Honda CR-V, which was being driven by a 65-year-old Kamuela woman. The collision caused catastrophic consequences. The encounter ended tragically when the cyclist was taken to Kona Community Hospital and declared dead.

On the other hand, the driver of the Honda CR-V was treated for minor injuries at North Hawaii Community Hospital before being released. Since then, the local police have opened a Coroner’s Inquest probe into the incident, focusing on the Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit.

As the community responds to the rise in traffic-related fatalities this year, which has nearly doubled since last year when 15 people were killed at the same time, authorities are currently looking for information from any witnesses who may have been present. Officer Dayson Taniguchi can be contacted with details about the collision, or anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers.
