Keith Schuermann Takes Helm as Cobb County’s New Library Director, Succeeding Retiree Helen Poyer

Keith Schuermann is the new Library Director of Cobb County, taking over from Helen Poyer, who is leaving after a resolute 18-year career. This is part of a recent change in library leadership. Schuermann, who has over 20 years of library management experience and was previously in charge of the Troup-Harris Library System, started his new responsibilities on December 2. According to Cobb County Communications, Schuermann’s goal is to maintain and grow the library system’s acclaimed services, which have earned it the title of “Library of the Year.”

With over 20 years of leadership in library systems, including his most recent position as director of the Troup-Harris Library System, Keith brings a wealth of expertise to Cobb, according to County Manager Dr. Jackie McMorris, who recommended Schuermann for the position. This sentiment aligns with Schuermann’s own zeal for his new role, where he plans to not only sustain but also amplify the library’s excellence to national recognition. “What sold me on working with Cobb County was the people I met and the conversations I had about this opportunity,” Schuermann told Cobb County Communications at the board meeting. He also said, “Your library system is the Library of the Year in the state, and your staff exemplifies that excellence.” I want that quality to become nationally recognized, not just at the state level.

In order to provide a seamless handover, Helen Poyer will collaborate with Schuermann throughout a transitional phase prior to her retirement. The creation of the Bookmobile program was one of Poyer’s accomplishments that were honored at the most recent board meeting. Visitors were taken aback by her family, and library employees joined in the festivities. The program will be renamed the Helen Poyer Cobb County Bookmobile in recognition of her efforts, carrying on her work in underprivileged neighborhoods.
