Daily Covid-19 minute: Ketchup deficiencyDuring the pandemic, there was a shortage of many household staples, including toilet paper, disinfectant wipes, and paper towels, to name a few. But the latest thing falling short of demand is ketchup! Ketchup retail sales were over $ 1 billion in 2020, about 15% higher than in 2019. What would be responsible for the increase? First, many restaurants switched to delivery during the pandemic, handing out ketchup packets to customers with their food. Ketchup packets have also been used by diners in restaurants as the CDC advised against sharing ketchup bottles. Heinz, who owns nearly 70% of the U.S. retail ketchup market, says they are catching up. They are opening two new production lines this month and hope to increase production by 25% over the course of 2021. That means they’ll be making over 12 billion packets of ketchup a year. So, for all of the ketchup lovers out there, fear not. Help is on the way.
